1946

  • June 1, 1946: USS Whale (SS-239) was decommissioned at New London.
  • June 1, 1946: USS Roncador (SS-301) was decommissioned and placed in reserve.

1947

  • June 1, 1947: USS Sea Robin (SS-407) completed a simulated war patrol circling South America and became the first U.S. submarine to round Cape Horn.
John Harrington TM2/SS was stationed between the tubes when Sea Robin rounded the Horn on 1 June, 1947. Thus becoming the first US submariner to accomplish this feat.

US Submarines in World War II: June 1

1941

  • USS R-2 (SS-79) – Assigned to Submarine Division 12 on 1 June 1941. R-2 left New London on 16 June for Key West, Florida (her new homeport) to conduct training and patrol duties.
  • USS R-11 (SS-88) – Transferred to Key West on 1 June 1941. She continued duty as a training ship at Key West for the rest of World War II.

US Submarines in World War II: May 31

1942

  • 31 May 1942 – USS Growler arrives at Pearl Harbor: After her Atlantic shakedown, Gato‑class USS Growler (SS‑215) transited to the Pacific. She arrived at Pearl Harbor on 31 May 1942, having steamed from New London via the Panama Canal. (Growler’s arrival marked her readiness for Pacific war patrols, which began the following month.)
